Making Decisions As A Single Mom And Not Regretting Them

Spread the love

Hey Mamas! It has been awhile since I did some good ol’ blogging. I will be honest with y’all… This single mama has been under a great deal of stress. Stress not about my circumstance but stressed about making decisions (major) regarding my health, career, and the trajectory of my future.

Before you say…

Yes, I have been seeking God and weighing my options but these decisions are well beyond me. Avah will be affected by each decision I make. But I know a choice has to be made at the end of the day. So I got into my bible and tried to figure out this decision making process.

Making Decisions in the Bible

Life in general is about making choices. So I am not surprised that most stories in the bible are about making a decision. Decisions to follow God, decisions to walk away from things we have always had, and decisions to move forward with the vision for our life.

I came across a situation with our dear Abram in Genesis 12-13 where choices were made and trajectories were shifted. Coming off of Abram and his family staying in Egypt due to famine in their own land, Abram was nervous that the Egyptians would kill him for his beautiful wife Sarai. So he lied about her status in his life and it caused them to be kicked out of Egypt completely. But there came a point in their travels that Abram had to decide to separate from his relative Lot who has been causing quarrel between their families and herdman. Which was not an easy choice…

Ever find it hard to set boundaries for our family members and those we love?

Abram had to take specific steps to reach the point of separation from his family. And once the decision was made, he was able to walk in the full blessing that God had for him long ago.

There was two key things I learned from this study:

  • Making a decision in fear does not make things better for you or keep you safe.
  • Making a decision to let go of things and people that cause discord can be the room you need to receive God’s blessing for you.

After reading these passages I was better able to understand the process I needed to take for making decisions for myself and my little family as a single mom. Usually in a two parent household,  you have a unique system of decision making but as a single mom all consulting is between me and me alone. Until I realized the importance of making God an integral part of my choices and casting my cares on Him.

Too loved to be stressed…

Love/Hate Relationship with Making Decisions

Ladies, I personally dislike making decisions. The anxiety it gives me drives me crazy and I try to avoid it by procrastinating. Sounds familiar…

To wear fake eyelashes or not to wear… LOL… Anywho…

For years, I have shied away from making important decisions out of the fear of making the wrong one and/or losing people in the process. Being so worried about all of that, I was doing more damage to my own self-confidence in the process.

Honestly, we all make decisions. Good or bad, life goes on. Understanding that even if you make a less than favorable decision, you can either sulk about it or learn from it. But know that what God has for you will always make its way around back to you. Only if you continue to seek Him and follow His instructions (the bible).

I had to come to a point and decide what has more authority in my life, fear or God’s truth. I had to break away from the fear of regret and start living a life welcoming to new lessons and experiences. and I want to share with you what I’ve learned along the way.

Below I share the key steps to decision making that I derived from the story of Abram and Lot’s separation.

Making Decisions And Not Regretting Them

single mom, making decisions, regret, how to

  • Seek God and Call on the Lord

First and foremost, this step should always be the first step in anything we are doing. If you go about your own way, you will feel the heaviness and burning from completing transactions without prayer. I have called on the Lord to provide the peace for and include Him in my decision making.

  • Present the Proposition to Parties Involved

I would say, determine what level of adjusting and preparing you will need to do in order to communicate your propositions effectively and gently. Also, make sure everyone involved is aware of the option.

  • Weigh the Benefits and Cons

Alert!!! Do not stay here for long! Identify if things are in a good place or if you need additional services to analyze the bad choices. Bad choices will lead to lessons but analysis will help you use wisdom and explore the options for the good.

  • Make A Choice

This is where the fear of regret comes in for most. You have spent all the time talking about it, praying about it, and analyzing it. Now it is time to follow through with the ideas, thoughts, and plans that you believe God has given you. My biggest challenge was being able to distinguish if the decision was from me or from God. However, making decisions is inevitable. Therefore, get used to making a choice based on your inner well-being rather than pleasing others.

  • Listen for God to give you further instructions

Lastly, always keep your heart, ears and eyes open for your next step whether it was a lesson or an immediate blessing. God will direct your path as long you seek Him first in all things.
