Sometimes as a single mom, we can feel isolated, ignored, and invisible. We not only feel this way with our peers, but we often feel this way with God. But that is far from the truth. God loves us, and there are things that God wants single moms to know that will change the way you feel.

Being a single mom doesn’t exclude you from having a relationship with God. The fact that you’re a single mom creates the opposite effect for God, causing Him to gravitate toward you more than others because of the nature of your circumstance. 

Our relationship with God

Take a look throughout the bible, Jesus was always hanging with those that were often overlooked or undeserved. Here’s a list to name of few:

  • The woman at the well
  • Tax collector
  • David

The list could go on. But…

God wants single moms to have a relationship with Him. He loves you, and wants to help you grow by showing you the gifts and callings that He planned for you long ago.

God loves to commune with you and talk to you. I know I am learning that God does not get annoyed with my talking and praying. It hurts him more when I don’t come to him as I should.

I know you may be tired of hearing about the barriers that stand in our way as single moms. However, more than less, our failure to acknowledge and become aware of them is the very thing that is holding us back in genuinely being the woman and mom that we desire to be.

Knowing what’s in your way will allow you space to figure out how you will either remove it, go around it, or eventually have to overcome.

Below I share some barriers that have stood in the way of communing with God:

  • Lies We Believe
  • Distraction and Busyness
  • Shame and Guilt
  • Unforgiveness
  • Offense

God tells us shortly through the small biography of Enoch that a man had walked faithfully with God. And he said it twice because it is an important part of our life.

I laughed at how short his story was because, in the passage of Gen 5: 21-24, it only said that he lived a long time and had some kids, but he walked with God faithfully with no details.

Despite the shortness of Enochs’s story in the bible, God still wanted us to know and glean from his life.  

So below, I share ten things God has let me know over the years and that I believe in my spirit that he wants you to know too as a single mom. We serve an affirming God, so it’s only fitting that he wants to answer our dyer questions.

 

10 Things God Wants Single Moms To Know

He’s not mad at you or punishing you.

‘“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord . “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool. Isaiah 1:18 

Being a single mom or becoming a single mom was never apart of the plan for any of us. But I know we can often feel the shame of becoming one. We can sometimes project those same emotions on our heavenly father, which contradicts what the bible tells us of his ways.

Remember that God wants nothing more than to comfort you, redeem you, and see his glory shine through your testimony. Punishment is not God’s way; discipline is.

‘As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? ‘ Hebrews 12:7

 

You are not alone.

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. John 16:32

Loneliness is the biggest lie that we believe as single moms. We feel that we are out there in the middle of the water, trying to stay afloat all by ourselves. And sometimes we may be, but that is purely by our own doing.

God tells us over and over again in the word that we are not alone and that He is with us. Whether with us through Holy Spirit or by utilizing people around us, we can be confident that we don’t have to do life alone.

And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. 1 John 4:13

 

You are still his daughter.

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

I praise God every day for my natural father on earth to help me genuinely practice being a daughter. But I know, for a unique group of single moms, some never had the chance to be the daughter to a father here on earth.

Within that, we may feel unequipped or inadequate at understanding our identity as God’s daughter. Yet, whatever we have struggled with in the past, He will help you to transform to your true identity now and for your future.

So now, as a single mom, you have the opportunity to understand his view as a parent. The same things you desire from your relationship with your children is what God expects from you. Even if you’ve made mistakes, God wants you to understand those shortcomings are forgiven and forgotten.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10

 

He will supply all your needs.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

This area can be challenging for single moms as we may lack and not meet needs. We are often hustling and bustling more than we have to.

The big thing that God wants from us is our trust. Trust him with your goals, life direction, finances, children, and heart. God wants us not to lean on our own will, energy, and strength to meet our needs but rather rest in him willingly.

Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:14

 

He uses others to move in your life.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9

When I was starting (full out) to live for Christ, I often looked for God to make a mighty miraculous move in my life. Boy, was I sitting and waiting forever.

God is a God of miracles, but he is also a God of tiny blessings. Once I started to look up and around, I was able to see the mini gifts in my life through others. From friends, business partners, job changes, and parenting, if it weren’t for God placing me on their heart, I wouldn’t be where I am today as a single mom.

There are different kinds of working (gifts), but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:6-7
 

 

You have a purpose and a calling beyond being a single parent.

The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out. Proverbs 20:5 NIV

And this is the Truth. Of course, God has called us to go out, be fruitful, and multiply. But that doesn’t mean just with your children but with your reason for being here.

Before we even became parents, we were already appointed to be kingdom ambassadors. Find your spark, find your passion, and discover what God has instilled in you to share with the world. Study gifts, learn from stories of calling with various bible characters, and explore your strengths.

I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. Job 42:2


He is the love you’ve been longing to receive.

This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 1 John 4:10

This statement speaks for itself. As single moms, some of our testimonies include our experiences with love. Looking for love in the wrong places, being deceived by someone we loved, and so forth.

God is the ultimate form of love. He is LOVE! A man or anything else in this world can never fill this love deficit because It has always been God’s place. Of course, our children often exemplify the love God gives at their young age but remember they are flawed just like us. So don’t expect your children to be everything you need when it comes to love. God is.

This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 1 John 3:18


You are redeemed.

But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned. Psalm 34:22

Honestly, this one is hard to conceptualize when life has dealt you some bad cards. But the answer is simple. We are redeemed because we believed and he first loved us.

We are redeemed because there is no way to be in Christ and still be in the same shadows: shame, guilt, and mistakes. Look at yourself, and if you find yourself plagued by sins, then it’s time to reassess. The truth is that He redeemed you and now you must walk it out.

Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. Psalm 107:2

 

What He says about you is more important than what men feel about you.

When they were discouraged, I smiled at them. My look of approval was precious to them. Job 29:24

In a world where everyone has an opinion and is ready to give thanks to social media, navigating this world as a single mom can be challenging. However, God encourages us and instructs us only to focus our eyes on the things above.

Do not be tripped up by the flaws and folly of another man. Do not be deceived or become victim to others’ ideas of you. Who are you more focused on the approval of man or God? Think about it.

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. Galatians 1:10

 

He sees you.

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:8

I put this affirmation from God as the last one because of this simple fact. God is not ignoring you, and you are not invisible. This world may outcast you, but Jesus will always bring you closer to him.

One of my favorite stories in the bible is the story of Hagar (and all the drama that went down with Sarai and Ab). As a single mother all alone with her child after the father wanted nothing to do with his responsibility, she was able to see that God got her and that he sees her.

Despite your story and your current circumstance, God sees you. He sees the good and the bad, and He loves you anyway.

Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lordwho had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” Genesis 16:13

God wants single moms to know, 

He’s good.

He is love.

God cares for them.

Has plans for them to have hope and prosper.

And that He knows our names.

I hope that you grab ahold of this truth that God wants single moms to know. Rise up, daughter of God, and take your rightful place. Chase your dreams, raise those children, but most importantly, glorify God in the process.
