Single Motherhood

5 Movies To Help Single Moms Believe in Love Again {with 7 bonus movies}

Spread the love

I am so excited for this fresh start in the month of May. This is the month of motherhood and womanhood which is right up my alley. It was only right that I write on an area that plagues us single moms the most through movies; the idea of believing in love again.

I’ve had a good amount of time to catch up on movies since after work I literally can’t go to my places of outlet (the gym or church). You’ve probably had time yourself, depending on the madness of the kiddos. Some of you have probably caught up on your entire list of Netflix movies, HBO now episodes, and Hulu series.

BRING BACK THE MOVIE THEATERS!!!!!!

Any who, I love movies! I love a good story, a good drama, a good comedy, and a good tear-jerker.  I even enjoy some of the thought-provoking films and the action movies (mostly for the hot actors! *shrug*). Some movies just get to my heart more, especially the ones that resonate with where I am in life and the things I hope for.

That’s why I love movies that are about single moms that have to overcome odds while finding love in the process.

The Reverse

Whether we like to admit it or not, we have had some experiences  in life that has caused us to doubt or push away the idea of love in the future.

I know in my past relationships, they have tainted my view on relationships and love. But those experiences were not the love and relationships that God designed for me to have. Therefore, I couldn’t measure God’s abilities on my wrong choices.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. Isaiah 55:8

That is why I am still a hopeless romantic. I still believe in God’s love and the love he places between his two greatest creations, a man and a woman.

Don’t worry. I am not living my life in the unrealistic fantasies of cinema…

It’s not about having what you see in the movies or becoming obsessed with the idea. I watch movies so I can still have hope. Gain authority of my own beliefs, thoughts and emotions. I refuse to let trials and tribulations determine my view and perceptions of the way I experience life here on earth.

Below I created a short, but sweet list of movies. Movies I love personally that demonstrates God’s love in the context of single moms finding love again in the midst of life challenges, healing, and transitions.

Movies To Help Single Moms Believe In Love Again

Disclaimer: Watch at your own risk. You will go through a wide variety of emotions. Bring the tissue box, popcorn, and even remove all breakable items for the angry parts. With the extra time during COVID-19, I would encourage you to consume things that will encourage you in the areas you truly desire.

 Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns

meet the browns, love, single moms, movies

This is the first movie because I love me some Angela Bassett. And anything Tyler Perry does recognizes the true challenges in the African American community around single motherhood and dealing with family issues. I love this film because it shows the rawness and fears that come with being a single mother. It also shows the resistance we apply to the idea of ever finding love and happiness again outside of our children. And even though Rick Fox is pretty old, he’s still fine as all get out. Plus my celebrity crush is in this one…Lance Gross. You can find this one on BET or BET+.

God Bless The Broken Road

single mom, widow, grief, love, movies

Boy, oh boy is this film a challenge of grief, faith, and moving forward. I love this one because it emphasizes the community support that can come from your church family to help you through your challenges. We need a faith community that will challenge us and encourage us to not lose faith in the midst of trials and tribulations. He will even use our children to open our hearts and tell us the truth we may need to move forward. You can find this one on Netflix right now.

Tyler Perry’s Medea’s Family Reunion

family issues, love, healing, movies, single mom

Yes, another Tyler Perry! He does a lot of films around the black woman experience and this one I have watched over and over again. And it’s not because of Boris Kodjoe, what a FINE man! I love this film because it shows the challenges and sweetness of blending a family, especially with small children. Most importantly, this movie provides an opportunity to see a single mother’s blessings in the midst of addressing family issues. Also, there are some other fine men in the movie too. You can find this one on BET or BET+ as well.

My Daddy Is In Heaven

family, work, grief, heal, single mom, movies

I caught this one late one night and I cried a good cry. This sweet story allowed me to understand how we can get so caught up in our pain and other things that we delay our own healing by not confronting our issues. We are surrounded by so many people that love us but we often end up hurting them because we’re hurting. Self-care is so important and it spills over onto all other areas of your life. It sometimes will take certain events to help us gain perspective of what God truly wants for us and to help us believe again. You can find this one on Tubi for free.

My Mother’s Future Husband

dating, children, single mother, movies, love, growth

Last but not least, the cutest of them all. I found this movie one day randomly and I was like this should be interesting. It was actually a really cute film on a mother-daughter’s journey to love. I always thought when I had my Avah I would end up like this mom, but i’m actually different. This movie provides a good perspective from the child’s point of view regarding mom’s love life. I found this one on Vudu which is free with ads.

Apple Mortgage Cake

Home Again

Think Like A Man

Love Takes Flight

Journal For Jordan

The Perfect Catch

The Perfect Holiday

Love Nugget

These movies I love so much for different reasons. These women have different circumstances but came to the same conclusion in life. There are other things we need in life besides money, raising kids, and keeping the home running. We need faith and hope but the greatest of all is LOVE! (1 Corinthians 13:12-13)

Tips when changing your beliefs and mindset around love and romantic relationship:

  • Still seek God on what growth still needs to be done to attract the love that he has for you. Know for sure in your heart that you are ready to date again.
  • Know that it won’t come when you obsess about it. It will come when you least expect it.
  • Understand that there is a possibility that this love won’t ever come in the romantic form. Look for love in everything.
  • Don’t be wide open to every romantic interest that comes your way. Use discernment and measure each guy to the standard that God has set for men as well as your own needs.
  • Heal from your past. The worst thing you can do is bring old baggage to a new experience. Avoid hurting someone in the process.

Love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. Just keep being friendly to that person. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive. -Martin Luther King Jr.

All in all,

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.( 1 Corinthians 13:4-8) Study love, know Love, and look for experiences of love everyday. God has plans not to harm you, but to prosper you and give you hope and a future in all areas of your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) Trust this and believe it. You’ll be surprised who will come into your life to demonstrate His love for you.
